We've had plaques of the Byrnes Family Crest and Coat of Arms in the family for years, our dad (Edward Joseph Byrnes) and his brothers (our uncles) always had one; sometimes featured in the living room and sometimes in the family rooms. Bending to the demands of the latest in interior design, you might at times also find the Byrnes Family Crest and Coat of Arms hanging in the basement sharing space on a pegboard with a number of hand tools. Made of hand-painted repoussed metal, copper-tack tacked to the dark wooden plaque, our Byrnes Family Crest and Coat of Arms has been in our immediate families since the early 1960's. The Byrnes Family Crest and Coat of Arms

My nephew Shaun remembers wanting a tattoo of the Byrnes Crest since he was ten, his older brother Jimmy wanted one, and wouldn't it be cool if Dad and the boys each got a tattoo of the Byrnes Family Crest? It was discussed, decided, ratified! All three of them would get the Byrnes Family Crest and Coat of Arms as a tattoo but the boys would have to make the final decision to have it applied once they were eighteen. Jim, (James Thomas Byrnes) my brother, the Dad of Jimmy and Shaun thought he was safe, the boys would forget or the wish for a tattoo would wane. Enter Shaun, 18 years of age as of August 12th, 2009. |

Why a tattoo of the Byrnes Family Crest and Coat of Arms? Shaun tells me the idea and history of The Byrnes Family Crest and Coat of Arms is meaningful and as he says "you only have one family and I'm proud to be a Byrnes!" It is a permanent, approximately 7" X 7" tattoo of five rich colors. Shaun's band of friends not only love the tattoo but believe it to be awesome as well. On the having-your-skin-pierced-with-needles pain scale Shaun says it is close to a nine out of a painful ten. The tattoo has healed well and this is due to careful washing and the daily application of oil although "it still itches and sweat makes it sting." | |
| Strictly speaking, what we call our Byrnes Family Crest is actually composed of three parts. (1.) The Byrnes Coat of Arms consisting of a red background and chevron between three right hands. (2.) The Crest: A mermaid with comb and mirror proper. And (3.) the Motto: 'certavi et vici' which translates to 'I have fought and won'.
My nephew Jimmy is saving his money, he needs $300 for his tattoo. My brother and his tattoo? I don't know, Jim? Jim?!? My brother must be biding his time. | |
