The Sony TR-620 came out about 1960. My grandfather (Edward Raymond Byrnes b. 1893) had one, they came with a case, a polishing rag, and manual. My grandfather would sit on the glider on his front porch in Byrnesville and listen to this little radio.
My grandfather didn't talk much but when he talked to me, he usually wanted to know what I had in my pockets. One time I pulled out a small live frog and a couple of swords made by placing nails on the railroad tracks then waiting for the train to press them flat. As I sit here remembering I can see the back of my grandfathers hand and the upper part of his forearm. I remembering asking him about the orange colored spots on his skin and he told me they were age spots. I remember the hair on his arm about the same color as the age spots. I look at my own arm and know that his age spots are the same as the sun damaged spots on my skin.
One thing I can still hear my grandfather say to me is, "Be a good boy, Ed.".
Byrnesville is a village near Barnesboro (now Northern Cambria), in Susquehanna Township, Cambria County, Pennsylvania. Part of my research is to find the earliest references to the place.
